Installing an AOD in your Classic Mustang
June 25th, 2008The installation of an AOD in a classic Mustang is for the most part a bolt in affair. The only items that are needed that are not factory Ford are the transmission crossmember, Shifter and kick down cable. The rest of the parts are your basic Ford stuff. Here are a couple of pictures, the Lokar AOD Kickdown Cable and Crossmember (From Yamabe Racing). The other things that you will
need for this conversion are a 164 tooth C4 flexplate, AOD torque converter, C4 Yoke shortened by 1″, and an aftermarket shifter. I was able to use the stock shifter with an AOD from a early Cougar. I had to modify the shifter rod to fit within the trans tunnel. Of course you will need an AOD trans, dust shield and torque converter cover. Some people have had to shorten the driveshaft, but the few times that I have done the conversion, I have not had to touch the driveshaft.
The AOD is longer than the C4 which is why you need the custom crossmember. Make sure that the kickdown cable is in a 1 to 1 ratio with the carb. To adjust the cable, make sure that at full throttle the kickdown lever is at full pressure position.
As I stated before, this is a bolt in affair. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.
